Biography And Filmography: Multitudes of young teen girls wanted to be like Demi Lovato during the summer of 2008 after she starred as Mitchie Torres in the Disney television movie “Camp Rock,” a teen summer camp musical that showcased her singing, dancing and acting next to the teen worlds biggest pop music heartthrobs, "The Jonas Brothers". “Camp Rock” shot the young star to teen celebrity status and hot new Disney superstar, much in the same way “Hannah Montana” made a star out of a young Miley Cyrus. She also dated "Hanna Montana" love interest, and young Disney heart-throb Cory Linley. Demetria Devonne Lovato was born on August 20, 1992 in Dallas, Texas. One of three sisters, that included Dallas and Madison, who were both accomplished actors and performers. Her mother was a seasoned cheerleader for the Dallas Cowboys, and had a short profession as a country music recording artist. She graduated from the Grapevine Colleyville Independent School where she sang in the choir, and danced in plays, at Cross Timbers Middle School for three years.
Demi started her performing career early by competing in, and winning first place in several young talent competitions and beauty pageants while living in Texas, and was introduced to show business when she performed at the Dallas Cowboys Football Thanksgiving Day Halftime Show. She then auditioned for a recurring role on the television series “Barney & Friends” in 1992. During the auditions, she became friends with fellow teen actress Selena Gomez, who was also a recurring character on the show. She also made guest appearances in several television shows including "The Disney Channel Games", "Live with Regis and Kathie Lee", "Prison Break" and "Just Jordan", and singed an eight episode deal on the television series "As The Bell Rings" in 2007 playing the part of Charlotte. The show failed to find an audience and was soon cancelled. Lovato got her big break in 2008 when she was hired and cast in the smash hit Disney Channel television movie "Camp Rock" as Mitchie Torres, starring alongside the fabulous pop music sensation "The Jonas Brothers". "Camp Rock" centered on a young teen girl who desperately wants to spend her summer at a prestigious rock camp, but can only attend if she works in the kitchen as one of the cooks. When she's overheard singing by a teen pop star at the camp (Joe Jonas), he is completely taken by her and sets out to find the girl behind the voice. But first she must confront her fears, step out of the kitchen and into the spotlight to show how she really is. The Disney network announced the young star as “The Next Big Thing” during a news conference held in New York, and many critics suspected Disney was quickly trying to find a replacement for Miley Cyrus. Cyrus had a bad string of public relations problems following her "Vanity Fair" photo shoot, and had several sexy pictures leaked to the internet showing her dressed in only panties and a bra. Critics felt Disney felt at risk with Cyrus, and were grooming Lovato as the next "good girl" singer, dancer, and performer. Her musical skill and growing celebrity status won her a spot in the "Jonas Brothers" 2008 world concert tour during 2008, as well as a record deal and initial work on her debut album.
In 2008, she teamed with her best friend Selena Gomez to star in the Disney networks family comedy "Princess Protection Program", about a tiny country that is invaded by a dictator and a young Princess who is taken into custody by the Princess Protection Program. She is whisked away to rural Wisconsin where she must learn the ins and outs of behaving like a normal American teenager. In the process of adapting to her new life, she gives her new friend and roommate, Carter (Gomez), a few lessons in how to act within a royal family. She next was cast in the starring role of Molly in the television family comedy "Welcome To Mollywood", about a young teen Molly, who wins a talent search for an upcoming television series and becomes the star. "Welcome to Mollywood" tells the story of what Molly goes through during the process. With the success of the first "Camp Rock", and the uber popularity on the Jonas Brothers, there was sure to be a sequel. The actress was tapped to reprise her role next to the in "Camp Rock 2" in 2009, where when Mitchie Torres returns to Camp Rock for the summer, she's expecting a simple summer of romance, fun, and music. But instead she finds a summer full of drama. The show culminates with everyone living happily ever after and the cast bands together to sing "Rock On!" during the finale.
