Biography And Filmography: A captivating, dark haired leading actor, Ewan McGregor knew he wanted to be a performer by the young age of ten, and by age sixteen had relocated to study with the renowned Perth Repertory Theatre in Scotland. He then moved to London England where he studied acting at the famous Guildhall School of Music and Drama. That same year, he made his movie debut in the comedy fantasy "Being Human" starring Robin Williams, and was then hired and cast in the lead role of Julien Sorel in the BBC television miniseries "Scarlet and Black", where he played a young Frenchman who seeks to become the next Napoleon but is betrayed by the married woman who loves him. He gained tremendous exposure as Alex Law, the arrogant young writer who becomes tangled in murder in "Shallow Grave" in 1994, where three friends discover their new room-mate dead but loaded with cash. He then accepted the starring role in the crime drama "Trainspotting" in 1995, a story about the harsh street culture of Glasgow Scotland, playing the role of Mark Renton, a polite heroin addict who tries to correct his life but gets tangled up in other serious crimes. The success of "Trainspotting", both with critics and audiences, helped launch his movie career. He then starred as the fashionable Frank Churchill opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in "Emma" (1996), a story set in rural 1800's England where things go bad for a young matchmaker after she finds a man for another woman.
Next, McGregor was cast as the star in the crime comedy "A Life Less Ordinary" (1997) starring Cameron Diaz. He played a cleaning man in Los Angeles who takes his boss's daughter hostage after being fired and replaced by a robot. He made Hollywood headlines and national magazine covers when he was hired for the role of the young Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas' "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" (1999) starring Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson and Keira Knightley. "The Phantom Menace" was a box-office smash hit, and another successful "Star Wars" franchise film allowing Ewan to shine as a true Hollywood celebrity and bona fide movie star. He next took the starring role next to Ashley Judd in the mystery thriller "Eye of the Beholder" (2000), about a private eye who shadows the same woman, who happens to be a serial killer, all over the United States for over ten years without her ever knowing, and strangely enough, occasionally acts as her guardian angel The following year he won great reviews as the star of the musical "Moulin Rouge!" opposite Nicole Kidman. A block-buster, big-budget production, "Moulin Rouge!" told the story of a young poet who falls for a beautiful courtesan (Kidman) who a jealous duke wants in this stylish musical with music drawn from familiar 20th century sources. The movie also gave the actor the chance to show his very capable singing voice. Also that year, he was cast in Ridley Scott's war drama "Black Hawk Down", starring with Josh Hartnett and Eric Bana, a war drama about 123 elite United States soldiers drop into Somalia to capture two top lieutenants of a rebel warlord and find themselves in a desperate battle with a large force of heavily-armed Somalis. He then revisited his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the George Lucas sci-fi prequel "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" (2002), introducing Hayden Christensen as the young Anakin Skywalker, where Skywalker shares a forbidden romance with Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) while his teacher, Obi-Wan Kenobi investigates a rebel assassination attempt which leads to the discovery of a secret Republican clone army.
He then starred opposite Renee Zellweger in the romantic comedy "Down With Love" (2003), a New York City love story set in 1962, where love is blooming between a journalist and a feminist advice author who's falling head over heels despite her lovers playboy lifestyle. The actor then starred opposite Scarlett Johansson in the sci-fi action adventure "The Island" (2005) as Lincoln Six Echo, a man who goes on the run after he discovers that he is actually a "harvested being", and is being kept along with others in a utopian facility. In 2005, he starred as Dr. Sam Foster in the mystery thriller "Stay" (2005) with Ryan Gosling and Naomi Watts. The movie focused on the challenges of a psychiatrist to prevent one of his patients from committing suicide while trying to maintain his own grip on reality. He then turned his attention back to the crime thrillers starring with Colin Farrell in "Cassandra's Dream" (2007), the tale of two brothers with serious financial woes, who when a third party proposes they turn to crime, things go bad and the two become enemies. Over the next two years, Ewan would appear in more than seven blockbuster Hollywood movies ranging from the romantic, to action adventure and mystery thrillers. His star was on the rise and there was no looking back. He began his string of A-list movies starring in the animated comedy "Jackboots on Whitehall" (2008), portraying the lead character Chris, a satirical movie version of World War II in which the Scottish defeat the German invasion of England.
